Who Am I?
Hi!! My name is Enoch Yu, a high school sophomore in
South Korea. I will be starting my junior year soon and
hope to further pursue my interests in mathematics and
programming over the summer. And yes, I hope to pursue
both pure math and computer science in college. If my
memory serves me right, I have always loved the logic
behind mathematical problems. I honestly don't know how
to put this in a word, but there is that Beauty in elegant
solutions.
Just like the other days, I was on the school bus scrolling
through the AOPS page to find interesting problems. I didn't
realize at that time that it would be the moment that changes
my life in middle and high school, perhaps my entire trajectory
of life. It was the moment when the International Mathematical
Olympiad (IMO) was introduced to my life. Honestly, I thought
I could solve every math problem out there as I was satisfied
with my progress in school math and AMC. However, after weeks
of scrutinizing the problem for weeks, I decided to surrender
and read the solutions, which took more weeks to comprehend.
The moment when I first encountered olympiad mathematics
transformed my journey in math. I began to pursue more
proof-based problems to really learn the “logic” behind
symbols and find the Beauty in solutions. One reason why
I still pursue olympiad math is because when you find or
learn an elegant solution, there is that moment where you
go speechless and begin admiring the Beauty. Continuing
from math olympiads, as I grew more interested in different
fields such as machine learning and its application in
quantitative finance, I began to learn that the Beauty
from logic is omnipresent in fields that require math.
Ultimate Goal
I have two primary goals in my life: 1.Establishing a
university in North Korea 2. Founding a hedge fund on Wall
Street. First, to achieve both ambitions, I wish to advance
as a quantitative researcher. Despite being a highly
selective career, I believe learning as a quantitative
researcher, while pursuing academic journey for Ph.D in a
field in pure mathematics, will accelerate my journey as it
aligns with my interest in mathematics and computer science.
After gaining insights on global economy and financial career
as a quantitative researcher and credibility by pursuing Ph.D
in a field in pure mathematics, I sincerely wish to establish
a hedge fund in Wall Street and Non-Governmental Organization
(NGO) to secure capital and aspiring people for constructing
a university in North Korea, immediately following the
reunification in the future.
One may ask, "Why a university in North Korea?" The primary
motivation is to reciprocate the blessings received from
countless people from diverse nations. Just as the commitments
from the people initiated the changes for South Korea from the
late 19th century, I wish to contribute to the unified nation
and the world by ameliorating education in the north side of
Korea. Until the day an ambition from a sophomore makes a
positive difference to the world and the silent radiance
scintillates, I will continue to strive for the dream!
Thank you for reading and spending time here with me!!
